The Brexit Nightmare Continues
Boris Johnson may well end up in a position where he is forced to abandon his own Brexit deal. Once the bill comes before parliament, it will most likely be amended in ways that will make it a much softer Brexit, with closer ties to the EU. If that is the case, Johnson will be forced to accept the extension and hope that a new election will give him the majority he needs to pass a Brexit bill on terms he can accept. The bad news for him is that a new election is very unlikely to give him that majority. While the Tories look likely to win a plurality of seats, it’s unlikely they will have the votes to pass the hard Brexit they want.
